Wildbiome Project

April to June 2025

The Wildbiome Project was a pioneering citizen science study investigating how an exclusive diet of wild foods affects the human gut microbiome. Participants foraged, hunted, and fished all their own food over a set period, avoiding any farmed or processed items. By analyzing stool samples before, during, and after the diet, researchers explored how wild food diversity and microbial exposure could influence gut health, offering insights into ancestral eating patterns and modern microbiome challenges.

I was part of a three-month programme, living inland in West Sussex, which meant my diet was primarily composed of game (venison, rabbits, pigeon, etc.), river fish, wild greens, and mushrooms. The story of my experience of the Wildbiome Project lives in my book, in Chapter Six, INTRA – the most intimate part of the book – about family, community, kinship, craft, and the passing of knowledge through generations. The Wildbiome Project was a perfect fit: our work was built on an evolutionary lineage of wisdom, shaped by observing other animals and plenty of trial-and-error, and done in honour of our own inner microbial communities.

Homeostatic Toes is a collection of art, poetry, storytelling, illustration, photography, and reflections exploring the cathartic nature of the arts.
It’s an eclectic anthology that aims to capture the many different ways in which those nearest to me explore their wondrous, volatile, and emotional selves.
