FRUIT FROCKS F O X

ORANGE EXPLORATIONS

2017-2018

FRUIT FROCKS F O X was born from my love of citrus – especially oranges. I eat one every day, but to my dismay, orange peels can’t be composted in vermicomposting systems. In 2018, while recovering from illness and working on a brief for the R Sustainable Fashion Show (hosted by Edinburgh College of Art and organised by fellow students), I found myself surrounded by a growing pile of orange peels. It felt wasteful – and like a creative opportunity.

1
I began experimenting with the material and transformed my first batches of peels into citrus peel bikinis. These early pieces were showcased at several fashion shows and exhibitions across Edinburgh.

2
Soon, I was sewing faster than I could eat. To keep up, I partnered with the renowned Kilimanjaro Café on Nicholson Street, which produces fresh orange juice daily. I’d collect their discarded peels, take them home, de-pulp, clean, and dry them – then begin sewing. The results: skirts, dresses, bikini tops, necklaces, earrings, headbands… and maybe, one day, shoes.

3
To improve the durability of the garments, I began a series of material experiments, testing treatments to make the peels more flexible and resistant. These explorations were as much about preservation and functionality as they were about form.
